500D Cordura® Nylon vs 600D Polyester

500D Cordura Nylon vs 600D Polyester

We have received many questions regarding the differences between 500D Cordura Nylon and 600D Polyester. I have put together a diagram and some supporting information to help better explain the differences between these two fantastic fabrics. Both the 500D Nylon and the 600D Polyester fabrics are great performers for hunting & outdoor projects. Hopefully the diagram below helps explain the differences.

500D Cordura Nylon vs 600D Polyester

Fabric Strength

The Cordura name is synonymous with ruggedness and strength so it scores a 5 out of 5 in our scale. Nylon is typically a stronger fiber than polyester and the 500D Nylon is no exception. However, the 600D Poly Oxford fabric is a very versatile as well. This fabric weighs nearly the same as the 500D Cordura Nylon and is used for rugged, durable products ranging from backpacks, camping chairs and hunting blinds. When fabric strength is important, our 500D Cordura Nylon is definitely stronger than the 600D Poly but they are both good choices for a strong solution.

Print Colorfastness

The 500D Cordura® Nylon scores better here due to the fact it is pigment printed instead of transfer printed. It might not look as nice, but it will definitely do better against the sun’s UV rays than the transfer printed poly will. 600D Poly Oxford is transfer printed and tends to fade faster in direct sunlight.

Print Quality

As mentioned above, the 600D polyester fabric utilizes transfer printing that achieves stunning detail and image quality. Together with the smooth print surface of the polyester, it produces an almost photographic image. This earns it a full 2 point advantage over the 500D nylon. The pigment printed nylon looks great – but the textured surface of the nylon fabric along with the pigment printing tend to give it more rugged and less defined print lines.

Water Repellency

Both fabrics come equipped with DWR (Durable Water Repellency) and PU coating on the back. This is the industry standard for waterproofing outdoor fabrics. The 500D Cordura scores slightly higher because of it receiving a 2 pass PU coating (thicker) where the 600D polyester receives a 1 pass. When it’s all said and done, this doesn’t make a whole lot of difference, but we have to give a slight edge to the 500D Cordura Nylon here.

Check out our Waterproof Test

Cleanability

Both fabrics are 100% synthetic and have DWR treatment. This makes them both resistant to mold and mildew while allowing them to shed any water-based mess like a true champion. However, as mentioned above, the polyester has a slicker surface than the textured, rugged feel of the nylon. This scores the 600D Polyester a 5 out of 5 on our scale for its ease of cleaning – just dampen a cloth… wipe and go!

Burlap is awful in comparison. These fabrics are perfect for hunting blinds.

Affordability

With all the bells and whistles that come with these fabrics, it comes as no surprise they are towards the higher end of our fabric pricing range. They’re going to run a little more than, say, cotton t-shirt fabric. However, the old adage “you get what you pay for” applies here as much as anywhere. These fabrics are constructed to take abuse. They will last longer and perform outdoors brilliantly. The 500D Cordura Nylon, with the extra strength characteristics, costs about 25% more than the 600D polyester.

Shadowblock / Concealment

The 600D Poly and 500D Cordura Nylon are both tightly woven and built similarly. We’re giving the edge here to the 500D Cordura because it’s a little bulkier, thicker and has the extra PU coating on it. Plus, the back of the nylon fabric tends to have a little bit of the camo print “bleed through” where the back of the 600D Poly fabric is just plain white. One exception to this – the 600D Poly | Shadowblock Backing- Mossy Oak Break-up Country – 60″ has a shadowblocking black PU coating. This is the ultimate fabric to hide you and to keep your shadows hidden on a sunny morning.

Why We Celebrate Flag Day June 14th

Flag Day

Flag DayIn the spirit of the love for our country and also our obsession with fabric, we thought it would be great to explain why we celebrate the most important piece of fabric flying in our nation. The American Flag.

Our flag or “Stars & Stripes”, was authorized by congress as the United States of America’s national symbol on Saturday June 14th, 1777. The entry in the journal of the Continental Congress 1774-1789 Vol. Vlll 1777 reads “Resolved that the flag of the thirteen United States be Thirteen stripes alternate red and white: that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

A Waubeka, Wisconsin school teacher named Bernard John Cigrand is one of the people credited with championing the celebration of the American flag. In 1885, he placed a 10-inch 38-star flag in an inkwell and had his students write essays on what the flag meant to them. He called June 14th the flag’s birthday and Stony Hill School is now a historical site. From that day forward Mr. Cigrand dedicated himself to inspire not only his students but also all Americans in the real meaning and majesty of our flag.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August 1946, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

So today, when you see the great American flag flying, be proud of the flag and what it truly represents. Be proud to be American and salute this wonderful piece of fabric.

Displaying the American Flag

When: You can display the flag outside from sunrise to sunset. If you want to fly it after dark, it will need to be lit. Don’t fly the flag during inclement weather, unless it’s an all-weather flag.

On the porch: The union of the flag–the blue section with white stars–should be placed at the peak of the staff unless the flag is at half-staff. When the flag is suspended from a rope on a pole extending from a house, the flag should be hoisted out, union first, from the building.

On the wall or the window: When the flag is displayed on a flat surface like a wall, the union should be at the top left.

On the street: The flag should be suspended vertically with the union to the north in an east and west street or to the east in a north and south street. The flag should never touch anything beneath it, so make sure it’s hoisted at the proper height.

At the office: Suspend the flag vertically with the union to the observer’s left upon entering. If the building has more than one main entrance, the flag should be suspended vertically near the center of the corridor or lobby with the union to the north when entrances are to the east and west, or to the east when entrances are to the north and south. If there are entrances in more than two directions, the union should be to the east.

On a vehicle: The staff should be fixed firmly on the right side of the vehicle. Do not drape the flag over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle or a boat.

Half-staff: During periods of mourning, it is common to see the flag flying at half-staff. Only presidents can proclaim such periods for a national remembrance. Governors can also declare mourning periods at a local level. In some cases, heads of federal agencies can order the flag flown at half-staff on grounds under their supervision. Traditionally, states and local governments follow the president’s proclamation during a period of national mourning.

5 Great Campsite Uses for Camouflage 70D Nylon Fabric

5 Great Camping Uses for Camouflage Fabric
5 Great Camping Uses for Camouflage Fabric

It’s camping season and there are times when you could use a few yards of waterproof fabric at your campsite. 70D Nylon ripstop is the perfect camping fabric. Everyone always tells me they already have tarps at their campsite. Let me tell you, tarps are not the same. Our fabrics are lighter weight and can be cut to length for whatever you need to use it for. I always keep a few yards around and here are just a few ways I have found it to be useful.

  1. Camper Leaks

Oh those dreaded camper leaks. Our 70D Nylon Ripstop is ideal for this type of situation. It’s waterproof, lightweight and doesn’t take up a lot of room in storage. Laying down a little bit of our fabric over top of the leak is a great temporary solution for any camper leak. Don’t throw a 50′ tarp down, use a couple yards of our fabric.

  2. Table Cloths

Most of our fabrics come in 60” widths. Having a few yards around for table cloths is great. You can cut the fabrics to the exact length you want. The fabric is waterproof and easily cleaned. The camouflage fabrics look awesome at the campsite!

  3. Covers

Our fabrics work really well for making custom grill covers. They are also great for covering just about anything else including woodpiles, mowers, ATVs, etc. The lightweight 70D Nylon is waterproof with a PU coating so having a few yards around for emergencies is a good idea.

  4. Emergency Shelter

Since our 70D Nylon Ripstop is lightweight and waterproof, I tell all of my hiking & camping friends to carry at least 6 yards of our fabric with them. It packs easy and is extremely strong and durable. Use it for an emergency shelter or tent.

  5. Hammock

Do you want to make a homemade hammock? Our fabrics are tough enough to hold a grown man. All you need is some rope, a couple stones to tie at the corners or grommets and you could be chilling on a comfy hammock in no time.

Camo Your Prom or Wedding With Our Camouflage Satin Fabric

Camouflage Satin Fabric for Wedding or Prom Dresses

Camouflage Satin Fabric for Wedding or Prom DressesThere is no better way to express your love for camo than to create a beautiful satin dress out of your favorite camouflage pattern. My niece recently got married and couldn’t find the exact dress that she wanted. She wanted to use the Muddy Girl pattern from Moon Shine Camo and couldn’t find a local bridal shop that had what she wanted. We provided her with the camo satin fabric and she took it to a local seamstress who helped her design and create a stunning wedding dress as well as matching bridesmaids dresses and matching vests for the groom and groomsmen. The outcome of the dresses and vests were exactly what she envisioned and she said it meant so much to her being able to be a part of designing the entire wedding party’s formal wear. She ended up using our 3.5 oz. Soft Hand Moon Shine Camo® Muddy Girl® satin fabric for the bridesmaids dresses, sashes and vests. Her beautiful bride’s dress was designed using our 4 oz. firm hand feel Mossy Oak Winter® satin fabric and finished off the camo theme quite nicely.

If you are more into traditional camo, maybe try using our 3.5 oz. soft hand Mossy Oak Break Up® satin fabrics for bridesmaid dresses. This pattern also goes really well with a Mossy Oak Winter which I think would be perfect for an entire bride’s dress. We also have in stock 3.5 oz. Soft Hand Satin – Moon Shine Camo® Undertow® which could be a nice complimentary blue within your camo wedding theme.

So if you can’t find the exact dress you want and want to design your own wedding party entourage, our fabrics are exactly what you need to get started. If you are a seamstress or are a business looking for the best camouflage fabrics available these fabrics are for you as well.

Check out our available satin wedding dress camo fabrics below. We will be adding even more camouflage satin fabrics soon so keep a lookout for new patterns that become available.

If you can’t find a local seamstress, head on over to our friends at CamoFormal.com.  They have some great dress selections using the very fabric that we sell!
